Maintenance grants are back
I’m proud that Labour’s Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, has announced the return of targeted maintenance grants for students from low-income households. These grants will help learners focus on their studies instead of worrying about how to pay the bills.
Importantly, this support won’t just go to university students. For the first time, maintenance grants will also be available for those studying higher-level technical qualifications at Levels 4 and 5, meaning many students at Gloucestershire College will be able to receive the financial support they deserve.
These grants will specifically support students taking priority subjects that are integral to the local and national economy, including healthcare, digital and technology, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and engineering. These courses equip people with the skills needed for key industries like healthcare, clean energy and advanced manufacturing, filling vital skills gaps both locally and nationally. The new University of Gloucestershire City Campus will also provide a modern hub for learning in the heart of the city, helping more students gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed.
Supporting education in Gloucester benefits more than just individual students. Every person able to complete their studies strengthens our local economy, improves public services, and contributes to a thriving, skilled workforce ready to tackle the city’s challenges and opportunities.
By backing both university and technical education, our Labour government is investing in Gloucester’s potential and restoring the promise that everyone should have the freedom to choose their own path in life.
