New unitary council for Gloucestershire

Gloucester is approaching one of the biggest shifts to local government in decades. From 2028, Gloucestershire’s County Council and its six district councils - including Gloucester City - will merge into a single unitary authority, reshaping how decisions are made and how services are delivered. For residents, this could make everyday life simpler: no more confusion over which council handles bins, roads or planning. One authority, one budget and clearer accountability should mean better value for money and a system that responds more directly to Gloucester’s needs.

But reform alone won’t guarantee improvement. I’ll be working hard to protect Gloucester’s interests throughout the transition. Gloucester must not be overshadowed by larger districts, and funding must reflect our city’s specific pressures - from regeneration to housing demand. Public services must improve, especially SEND provision and road maintenance. And Gloucester’s civic heritage matters: our historic Mayor and Sheriff roles must remain part of our future governance.
