New powers for councils to tackle dodgy shops

A big change is coming to our high streets, and you get a say.

For years, councils haven't had the power to stop certain businesses from popping up everywhere and ruining the high street. That's about to change.

First, we're scrapping the old 'aim to permit' rule. That's the one that generally permits new gambling shops; soon, if a community says we've got too many, the council can actually act on it.

Second, vape shops and adult gaming centres won't be able to open without proper planning permission.

Third, no more vape shops near schools. Councls will have stronger powers to block them, and stop clusters forming on the same street. Nor will shops be able to pretend they're general convenience stores when they're just selling vapes.
